| Elmer's First Camp Out of "2007" |
Elmer's Camping season got under way on April 20th. The weather called for a few showers on Friday night and major storms on Saturday night. As usual they were wrong. On Friday community of Elmer had just got done eating when some major lightning started coming our way. It looked like it could be a major storm.
The Mayor, Zane, and The First Lady headed to town to get their daughter because the radio said there was a tornado warning for Cozad. We headed out of the camp ground and began down the valley hill when The Mayor spotted a huge tornado on the ground. It looked to be about 7-8 miles straight west of our location.
The Mayor called a friend on the fire dept, who was out spotting for tornado' at the time and told her that the tornado was south west of Willow Island, NE and it was a big one. We found out later that the storm was so big that the Mayor was off about 10 miles and the Tornado was just south west of Gothenburg.
We found out later the tornado started south of Moorefield, NE and stayed on the ground until it was north of Gothenburg. This is over 20 miles.
It went over I-80 and flipped 3 semi trucks over and backed up traffic for miles.
The pictures below show our camp site and some of the tornado damage that we went to see in the morning of the 21st.
We found a cow that had been hit very hard by flying debris or was picked up and thrown by the tornado.
Zane was unable to cook his bull fries because it started raining late Saturday night and never quit until after noon on Sunday. It rained over two inches.
